Summary
In a story on MSNBC , it talks about gun rights activists and supporters rallying at Obama's town hall meetings, wearing firearms and sidearms in plain veiw. It told of a conveinence store robbery, to where an armed citizen twarted the robbery and saved the life of the clerk and other customers. The supporters of our right to carry, complained that the media only portrayed the carring of guns in a negative way, and witheld instances such as the conveinence store robbery attempt. The activist worry that if they stand up for citizen's right to carry, that those freedoms will begin to diminish under the Obama led Democrat administration.
Response
It is my opinion that if the criminals are going to carry guns, then we should be able to carry them to protect ourselves. I don't personally own a gun, but I am a brown belt in Jeet Kune Do. But if I wasn't, then I probably would have one. There is nothing worse than a feeling of helplessness in a crisis situation. I am a firm supporter of the constitution in the context of which it was written, and I think that it is fine as it is, and the more it is altered and amended, the worse off this country becomes. In a world that is filled with turmoil and uncertainty, with soaring unemployment as well as soaring grocery and utility prices; I feel that people are worried what lengths people will goto to survive, and want to be prepared for the worst. Alot of people might be uncomfortable with the idea of a high percentage of the population walking around with guns strapped to their hips. I personally feel that if a criminal walks into a bank to rob it, and he sees a half dozen people wearing guns, he's probably going to seriously reconsider his plans to rob it.

I agree with you. I'm under 5' tall, and even should I get martial arts training, if someone gets within grabbing range of me, I wouldn't give much for my chances. I believe it's my right and responsibility to protect myself for my husband's and son's sakes. And I believe concealed carry is the way to go, because if someone doesn't know it's there, they can't take it and shoot me with it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, that said...the guy that openly carried the AR-15 to the rally (unloaded)was stupid beyond belief. First off, what good is an unloaded gun if you're being come at by a bunch of idiots bent on mayhem? Second, carrying openly that close to a sitting president was just...gah, I don't have words for how dumb that was, whether he was actually a threat or not. At the least, he's now on a watch list, where they may not have noticed him before.
And last, but not least, he just advertised, to pretty much every criminal in the country, that he has a the civilian version of an American military rifle that's valued in the neighborhood of $785-$1500, depending on brand. That's practically begging to be robbed.
Actually the fact that mainstream media is publishing this report, about someone who was so glaringly stupid, just supports the claim that the media don't shed a positive light on legal gun owners. We don't hear any news about how many would be robbers or rapests were stopped because someone legally had their gun on them. But such is the world we live in. I agree iwth you Jason, we should be able to carry guns if we want to or feel a need to. The funniest thing about all of the proposed gun legislation is that none of it will stop a criminal from having a firearm. It will just make it harder for law abiding citizens to defend ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI've never had a problem with firearms or really any interst in them either, so I didn't think any of the controversy really mattered to me. Then I went and married a cop. And I've gotta say, I really like having a gun in the house when he's gone. I don't have a conceal and carry permit but would like one eventually. I've gotten much more comfortable with the idea of a gun since I've become more educated on the safety and mechanics of it. Heck, my husband was gone for a couple of days recently and I slept with the whole gunbelt, taser, pepper spray and all, right next to my bed. I like knowing that I can protect myself should I need to. I don't want that taken away.
ReplyDeleteAnd Deb, I totally agree with your point that there is a media bias when it comes to portraying gun owners. You never hear about someone being able to protect his family because of that gun. You just hear about one dimwit in a hundred who probably really shouldn't have a weapon.
I don't and wont agree with anything that takes a right, such as protecting ourselves and/or our families, away from us. If that is what the Obama Administration is doing then I think that they should have to go around with no weapons to protect them. I could bet you a million bucks that they would think twice about taking that right away from everyone in the country.
ReplyDeleteAmen to that Jimmy. You know the secret service is packing heat for sure.
